About

Peter Atencio is an Emmy-winning film and television director, producer, and writer based in Los Angeles.

He began in the early 2000s as a freelance director, working on independent features, television, and comedic short films. With the launch of YouTube in 2006, Peter quickly became recognized as a unique voice in the fast growing short-form comedy world. His online work has over 1.5 billion views on various video platforms and streaming services, making his work some of the most widely recognized pop culture in the world.

While serving as the director and executive producer of the hit sketch comedy tv series Key & Peele, he was nominated for three prime-time Emmy awards, winning one for Best Variety Sketch series in 2016. He was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and won a Peabody Award and an American Comedy Award for best tv director for his work on the show.

After ending the series, he transitioned with stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele to the world of feature films with 2016's KEANU, an action comedy for Warner Bros. Next, he directed the Amazon Studios original series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, along with fellow executive producers Ridley Scott and creator Dave Callaham. He then transitioned to international television work, relocating to Prague to direct and showrun the action drama Whiskey Cavalier for Warner Bros. television. The show aired on ABC in the United States and internationally in over 60 countries. He also recently directed an episode of Jordan’s Peele’s The Twilight Zone for CBS.

He’s slated to direct another upcoming pilot for ABC and Lionsgate, and is currently developing multiple feature film projects, including Down Under Cover, an action comedy starring Chris Hemsworth and Tiffany Haddish for the Russo Brothers' AGBO productions; and an adaptation of 80s icon Fraggle Rock starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Jim Henson Productions and Regency Pictures.

In addition to longer form narrative work, he also is a prolific commercial director, having worked with a variety of clients, including brands such as Pepsi, Taco Bell, Twitter, Honda, and more; and has won numerous advertising industry awards including three Clio Awards.

When he's not busy making unique, entertaining, and visually stunning works, he keeps himself busy by writing profiles in the third person. He is represented by UTA and Artists First for film and television projects and RSA (Ridley Scott & Associates) for advertising and special projects.
